Batteries and dangerous goods. PHMSA's lithium battery guide for shippers flags damaged batteries as higher risk. Establish type and carrier acceptance first.
Shipping Optimization from China
How to Compare Shipping From China by Speed, Cost and Risk
Compare shipping from China by writing one shipment brief — product, packed dimensions, weight, destination, declared value and restricted attributes — then asking every provider to quote against it. Judge the answers on delivered cost, transit time and risk — not on the headline rate.

- Postal
- Dedicated line
- Express
- Air freight
- Sea freight
Build the Shipment Brief Before You Ask for a Route
Use the same facts to make quotes comparable.
Shipment brief checklist
- Product and material. Category, material, and whether it is fragile, powered, liquid, powder, aerosol, magnetic or branded.
- Packed unit. Weight and outer dimensions measured after packing, not from the supplier listing.
- Order shape. Units per order, single- or multi-item, and typical monthly volume.
- Destination. Country, and whether deliveries reach remote or residential postcodes that are priced differently.
- Value and classification. Declared value per parcel, and whether a qualified party confirmed the commodity code.
- Responsibility. Who acts as importer, who pays duties and import taxes, who holds the records.
- Promise. The delivery expectation already published on your storefront.
If any of these facts are unverified, fix that in your supplier verification process.
Separate Processing Time From Transit Time
Processing time covers everything before handover: lead time, receipt, inspection and the daily cut-off.
Transit time covers first-mile collection, export handling, line-haul and final delivery.

Different teams control each: slow handover wastes a fast route.
If processing is the constraint, fix your order fulfilment setup.
Compare Route Families, Not Carrier Names
Compare trade-offs, not service names.
| Route family | Usually suits | Main trade-off | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Postal / small packet | Light, low-value parcels where cost outweighs speed | Thinner tracking detail | Whether scans continue after the parcel leaves China |
| Dedicated line | Repeat parcel volume to one country | Tied to the line's own schedule and customs arrangement, outside your control | Departure frequency, and what happens when a consolidation misses its slot |
| International express | Urgent, high-value or sample shipments | Often a higher parcel rate; dimensional weight has a strong effect | Remote-area, residential, fuel and peak surcharges |
| Air freight | Bulk replenishment to a warehouse, not to end customers | Adds import handling and a second delivery leg you must arrange | Who clears the goods and who delivers the final leg |
| Sea freight | Heavy, bulky, planned inventory | Long lead time; unsuitable for reactive fulfillment | Whether cash and demand forecast tolerate the lead time |
Extra handling and weak scans erase a cheaper headline rate.

DDP, DAP and the Legacy DDU Problem
DDP and DAP allocate clearance responsibility; they are not carrier or service names. The ICC Incoterms 2020 rules are the official source.
DDU still appears on rate cards; ICC's Incoterms history records that the 2010 revision removed it.
| Question | DAP | DDP |
|---|---|---|
| Who arranges main carriage | Seller | Seller |
| Who handles import clearance | Buyer side | Seller side |
| Who pays duties and import taxes | Buyer side | Seller side |
| Who is named as importer | Only a party whose identity and ability to import are confirmed for that destination and transaction | Same confirmation on the seller side; naming a party does not by itself make DDP executable |
| Typical failure mode | Recipient is billed on delivery and refuses the parcel | Seller assumes coverage the contract or destination does not support |
DDP names who accepts the obligation; it is not proof that the goods can be cleared — see the DDP shipping from China explainer.
Work Out Chargeable Weight Before You Compare Prices
A price per kilogram means nothing until you know which kilogram is billed — see FedEx on dimensional weight and UPS on shipping dimensions and weight.
- Actual weight is what the packed parcel weighs on the scale.
- Dimensional weight converts parcel volume into a weight using a divisor set by the carrier and service.
- Chargeable weight is normally the higher of the two — confirm the rule in the quote rather than assuming it.
Worked example — hypothetical only
Hypothetical · assumed divisorA packed carton measures 40 × 30 × 20 cm, a volume of 24,000 cm³, and weighs 2.6 kg on the scale. Using an assumed divisor of 5,000, the dimensional weight is 24,000 ÷ 5,000 = 4.8 kg. The chargeable weight is then 4.8 kg, not 2.6 kg.
Every figure above is illustrative: divisors, rounding, measurement points and minimums differ by carrier, service and lane.
Void space adds chargeable weight; under-packing invites damage — balance the two in your packing and inspection standard.
Make Every Quote Answer the Same Questions
Comparable quotes beat cheap ones; a question the provider will not answer is itself a warning sign.

- Chargeable weight basis, divisor and rounding
- What the rate includes: pickup, fuel, remote area, residential, oversize, peak
- Duties and import taxes: excluded, collected on delivery or prepaid, and under which Incoterms rule
- Who is named as importer, and who keeps the customs records
- Tracking milestones, and whether final-leg scans stay visible
- Failed delivery, redelivery, address correction and return-to-origin cost
- Loss and damage: compensation basis, evidence required, claim window
- Restrictions: batteries, liquids, powders, aerosols, magnets, branded goods
- Cut-off times, working days and peak-season conditions
- Quote validity date

Follow One Decision Sequence per Product and Destination
Run this in order — stopping early is a valid outcome.
- Screen restrictions. Resolve acceptance for batteries, liquids, powders, aerosols or magnets before comparing prices.
- Check the destination. Confirm clearance requirements, declared-value handling and who will be the importer there.
- Calculate chargeable weight. Use the packed unit, not the product spec.
- State the promise. Write down the delivery expectation your storefront already makes.
- Shortlist two route families. One that fits the promise, one fallback that fits the budget.
- Test with real orders. Hold product, packaging and destination constant so the route is the only variable.
- Review with your own data. Delivered cost per order, delivery spread, exception rate and refund reasons.
Hold the order while classification or acceptance is unknown — premature dispatch costs far more to fix.
Read Tracking Exceptions Before You Call a Parcel Lost
An exception is a status category, not a diagnosis. FedEx explains that it is a temporary delay, not necessarily a late arrival. UPS lists exception with the reason in shipment detail.
Triage by what the status implies:
- No scan since handover.Often a scan gap. Confirm collection happened before escalating.
- Held in customs.Ask for the reason and the missing document — a paperwork question, not a speed one.
- Address problem or failed attempt.Someone must act, usually the recipient. Delay compounds into a return.
- Returning to sender.Decide who pays, and whether a reship is cheaper than the return.
- No movement well beyond the route's normal pattern.Escalate formally, with dates, and open the claim rather than waiting.
Evidence to request from the carrier or agent
Last scan time, location and who owns the action. The shipment exception explainer covers the wording.
Know Which Questions Are Escalations, Not Route Choices
Some questions look like route selection and are not.
Customs, tax and classification. Commodity codes and VAT need qualified advice — willingness to ship isn't a compliance opinion.
Treat both as holds: get the answer, then return to the comparison.

When Overseas Stock Deserves a Test
Local stock shortens delivery but converts a per-order cost into a committed one.
- A few SKUs produce repeat, reasonably stable weekly demand.
- Your published delivery promise is one that China-direct routes cannot meet in that market.
- Returns need local handling rather than a long journey back.
- Chargeable weight makes bulk movement clearly more efficient than parcels.
- Demand concentrates into a peak you already know is coming.
Set those triggers against tied-up capital and up-front duties. Test one SKU first.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does shipping from China typically take?
There is no single answer — question any provider quoting one range for every country.
What is the difference between DDP and DDU/DAP?
DAP puts clearance and duties on the buyer; DDP puts them on the seller. DDU is legacy — removed in 2010.
How should a seller choose among postal, dedicated-line, express, air and sea routes?
Match the route to the shipment: screen restrictions, check the destination, calculate chargeable weight, then state your delivery promise. Air and sea freight replenish your stock; they do not deliver to customers.
My scale says 2 kg but the quote bills more — why?
Carriers price parcel space as well as mass, using a carrier-set divisor. Chargeable weight is normally the higher of actual and dimensional weight — confirm the rule in the quote.
